JOIN THE SUGAR NINJAS!
VOLUME 2 DEADLINE: 4/15/10
Interested in becoming a sugar ninja, too? Well, if you’re a female comics artist/storyteller, we are ready to accept your submissions for SUGAR NINJAS volume two (scheduled to premiere in May, 2010).
What are Ana and Zelda looking for? Well, we’re actually pretty accommodating. While both of us have a soft spot for all-things manga (Ana is especially fond of shoujo), we are open to any style or (almost any) subject you’d care to tackle. As with SUGAR NINJAS volume one, there will once again be both a SWEET book (with generally family-friendly stories and art) and a SPICY book (full of edgier, not-so-family-friendly material, possibly including violence, partial nudity, naughty language, and “mature” subject matter). The goal of both books is to promote and showcase female artist/storytellers and will feature a combination of comic book stories, comic strips, online comics, children’s picture book stories, illustrations, sketches, and more!
Something new for volume two will be the addition of an isbn number, allowing stores to order copies, too. Ideally, this will allow individual sugar ninjas to set up book signings at their local bookstores and libraries.
In order to make things easier for both the artists and the editors, as well as to make sure the books are ready to print on schedule, we are changing the way we accept submissions this time around. PLEASE make sure to go over the guidelines listed below.
- We are printing in black and white (save for the cover!) If you have colored works, please greytone them to your preference.
- Our books are produced in a landscape format at 9″ x 7″, with a print area of 8.5″ x 6.5″ – we ask that you pre-format your pages to be this size before submitting. Right-click here to download a basic template!
- All submissions absolutely need to be at least 300 dpi (or above).
- All submissions need to include an artists’s profile/contacts page that will be printed in the books preceding their work.*
- We would prefer for your submissions to be evenly numbered (that is, everything would start on a left hand side, and end on a right.)
* If you are submitting a SINGLE illustration/comic page/general page-o-stuff, please contact either Ana or Zelda and let them know – we may or may not be requiring a profile from you.
We accept the following file formats: PDF (preferred), PSD and JPG.
We also have access to the following programs, should you need help: Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter, OpenCanvas (1+3), PaintToolSAI and GIMP.
Keep in mind, and this is very important, ALL submitted material MUST be your own work. We love fan art as much as anyone, but the SUGAR NINJAS features all-original material. You can produce work alone or as part of a team, but you CANNOT use someone else’s characters and ideas. The first page of every SUGAR NINJAS book will clearly state that the copyrights to all the stories and artwork are owned by the respective creators, not by Ana and Zelda. By submitting to the SUGAR NINJAS, you are giving us permission to print your work as a part of our anthology and for use in website and promotional matters, but rest assured that your work is yours to own!
While we DO reserve the right to deny work (entirely or in part) for any reason, most likely that reason will be space issues as we do have a limit to the page number. We will be sure to let you know what’s up should anything happen, but please don’t let this discourage you from sending us all you want!!!
Still have questions? Sure thing – we love questions! Be sure to mention SUGAR NINJAS and QUESTIONS in the subject, just to keep things tidy!
- General Questions? Write to Ana May (bob pendarvis) at: info@sugarninjas.org
- Technical Questions? Write to Zelda Ravenel at: zeldakins [at] yahoo.com
When you’re ready to send in your finished submissions, send your files to submit@sugarninjas.org!
We look forward to seeing your work. Remember, the submissions DEADLINE is APRIL 15th, 2010.
